DOJ Rejects BSL
The Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued proposed rules to enforce the Americans with Disabilities Act. Specifically, with respect to breeds of dogs used as service animals, DOJ had this to say:

Recently, Russellville, Kentucky police chief Barry Dill announced a plan to round up dogs believed to be "pit bulls" if their owners are not in compliance with licensing, insurance and other requirements.

Danish Dog Act Goes into Effect July 1
Denmark's new Dog Act banning 13 breeds goes into effect July 1, 2010. The following breeds are targeted though dogs said to be pit bull terriers and Tosas were banned in 1991:
American Staffordshire Terrier
Central Asian Ovtcharka
Dogo Argentino
Fila Brasileiro
Caucasian Ovtcharka
Sarplaninac
South Russian Ovtcharka
Tornjak
Tosa (banned in 1991)
American Bulldog

FL Bills to Allow Breed Discrimination are Dead
Update May 5: Both S.B. 1276 and H.B. 543 have died in committee.
Update Mar. 4: The Florida Senate Community Affairs Committee has voted 9-2 today to repeal the state's prohibition on breed discriminatory laws outside of Miami Dade County.
Toronto Humane Society Survey: BSL Does Not Work
The Toronto Humane Society has released the results of a survey of cities that establishes Ontario's 2005 ban on "pit bull" breeds or dogs that resemble pit bulls has not made any difference in the number of dog bites.
In fact, dog bites dropped 10% in the year prior to the ban, 2004-2005, then dropped slightly in 2006. But subsequently, the number of bites rose to near 2005 levels.
Lawsuit Challenges Enforcement of Pit Bull Ban
Plaintiff Leonard Shelton, a former resident of Lakewood, Ohio, has filed a fourteen count lawsuit against the city, its animal control officer, Michael Stewart, and police officer, Kenneth Kulczycki, the police department and various unnamed police officers.
Lawsuit Challenges Denver, Aurora Pit Bull Bans
Allen Grider, Glenn Belcher and Valerie Piltz have filed suit in federal court, challenging the pit bull bans in Denver and Aurora, Colorado.
The Animal Law Center is representing these plaintiffs and plans to have the case certified as a class action.
