Sulphur Springs, Texas city councilor Craig Johnson stepped up to lead an effort to ban the use of carbon monoxide gas chambers in that city's animal shelter.
And he won.
House Passes UT Bill Restricting Ways of Killing Shelter Animals
Update Mar 4: The Utah House of Representatives has passed a substitue version of H.B. 185 that would restrict the means of killing shelter animals to "lethal injection" and carbon monoxide gas chambers with certain restrictions. The bill has moved to the state Senate.
Only one week remains in the Utah 2010 legislative session.
NC Gas Chamber Legislation is Dead for this Session
Update: The pro-gassing bill, H.B. 27, was defeated in Committee today. That bill is now dead. Davie's Law, H.B. 6/S.B. 199 is also dead.
Despite their promises during their election campaigns last year, neither Gov. Perdue nor Sen. David Hoyle said a word in support of Davie's Law or any gas chamber ban.

Help Shut Down Brutal Gassing Pound in Quebec
Mark your calendars! May 2, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. A protest rally at the dog pound of St-Lin, Saint-Lin-Laurentides, Quebec.
This dog pound services at least 30 municipalities. Some say no effort is made to find owners of impounded animals.
Macon Gas Chamber Torn Down!
The gas chamber at the Macon, GA Animal Control shelter was torn down Monday, April 13.
Swings with the sledgehammer were sold for $10 for the benefit of the animals at the shelter.
Macon City Councilperson Nancy White, said, "Central Services & Macon Animal Control is poised to move forward with building modifications to end the gas chamber and switch to euthanasia by lethal injection. This represents a lot of selfless effort and sacrifice on the part of many volunteers in our community."

Update: The bills in New York, West Virginia, New Mexico, Illinois passed and are now law!
Pennsylvania Bill Would Mean the End of Animal Gas Chambers!
Pennsylvania Senate Bill 672, introduced by Sen. Sean Logan would mean an end to animal gas chambers in the state.
The bill is currently in the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee.
Michigan to Ban Animal Gas Chambers?
Michigan State Rep. Rick Jones has introduced H.B. 4263 that would ban the use of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide to kill homeless animals in public shelters.
A simple bill but one that could stop suffering in a big way. 12 public shelters in Michigan still use gas chambers to kill homeless, sick, and injured animals and those deemed otherwise unadoptable.

IL Restrictions on Use of Gas Chamber Now Law
Aug. 29: Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has now signed into law S.B. 38, a bill restricting the use of gas chambers.
